"His work is careful on mostly a flat Stradivarius model. The varnish is golden yellow on sometimes a rather greenish tinted ground. The red varnish is rare, frequently hard, and is easily chipped. the purfling strips are characteristic, with the black very worn and withered looking. The scrolls are handsomely carved with frequently long protruding flanges. The whole output of Nicolas Gagliano bears a personal stamp, and shows a serious approach to the art of violin making. In the choice of wood he was not always over exact (a characteristic of most other Neapolitan makers), nevertheless the tone of nearly all his instruments is very satisfactory, and sometimes outstanding."
